How to Create Your Own Spelling Lesson Page

You can easily create a web page that lets your students use your spelling word lists with the AAASpell.com exercises. The links will allow the students to access the exercises without having to type in the word list. We have created an example of a simple web page that can easily be modified to customize it for your class so that it will use your own lists of spelling words.

The procedure to use this example page is:
  1. Click here to open the model page in a new window.

  2. Save this model page on your computer so you can edit it. Use the FILE > SAVE menu option.

  3. Open the page in an editor. A html editor is the easiest but a text editor is also fine. The Windows text editor is located by clicking START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > NOTEPAD. If you use this editor, turn off word wrap in the FORMAT > WORD WRAP menu item. Change the FILES OF TYPE at the bottom to ALL FILES and find and open the model page you saved in the last step.

  4. If you are not too familiar with editing web pages, start slow and make a small change then view the page in a web browser to see if the change was what was desired. If is was not, it is easy to go back and undo the change.

  5. On line 10 change "Ms. Smith's Fourth Grade Spelling" to an appropriate title

  6. Change dates for each six weeks period.

  7. If your school uses 9 week quarters, change the lines containing the weekly words by editing, cutting and pasting

  8. On each weekly line, replace the PLACE,YOUR,WEEK,XX,SPELLING,WORDS,HERE with your spelling list for that week. Do not use spaces and separate each word with a comma.

  9. Save the page and view it in a web browser by opening a browser and then opening the page using the FILE > OPEN menu option. If there are errors correct them in the editor and reload the page in the web browser.

  10. Check that the links call up the proper page from AAASpell.com and that the exercises are loaded with the proper spelling words.

  11. Get this page loaded onto your school website. This will allow students to access it from school and from home to practice their spelling.
